Bob & Patty's Excellent Afghan Adventure - Day 2

The following is an excerpt from the journal I kept while on our trip to Afghanistan April 21-30, 2008.

If you received our daily email updates you've seen most of it, but not all. Since our return I've added a few notes and comments which I've put in blue italic type so those of you who don't want to read it all again can pick out the "new stuff." <g> I've also added a couple photos from each day of the trip, which weren't always in the daily updates.

If you'd like to see more photos from the trip, follow the link to the left. I took most of them, but some were taken by other team members Ron Atchley, John Eisel, Gary Goodenow, and Susie Knezel. (John and Susie are pros, so the best ones probably came from them. <g>) If you'd like hi-rez copies of any of them just let me know.

Tuesday, April 22 (new)

Our flight plan included flights from Denver to Detroit, Detroit to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Dubai, and finally Dubai to Kabul. With the long layovers in Amsterdam an Dubai, the total travel time was more than 36 hours. Unfortunately the layovers weren't quite long enough to allow us to leave the airports to do any exploring or -- since we were all so charged up with anticipation -- allow for any decent sleep either.

The trip was very loooooong, but with the combination of serious sleep deprivation and a couple hypnotically long eastbound flights (that make time zones zip by like corn rows in Kansas), we were in Afghanistan before we knew it!

Michelle, Lanae, and Patty try to catch some zzzz's using our carry-on bags as a mattress.
